I came across Jeremy Brett playing Homes on my local PBS station, and I was hooked; I had to have the collections.
What a shock to find out that he has been dead for 14 years! These episodes are as fresh and as entertaining as anything produced today.
This is surely the definitive Holmes. I had previously thought that Basil Rathbone held the trophy, but he does indeed pale next to Mr. Brett. Jeremy Brett gives Holmes and inner life, a fuller life, than Rathbone did. This may be due to studio expectations that hobbled Rathbone, but Brett's Holmes is an eye-opener.

I was and still am a personal assistant to many of our English thespians. I knew Jeremy Brett, caring for him at certain times in his life. Although he left a legacy of brilliance as an actor, he was just Jeremy. He was a man of courage and will be remembered so....

No doubt about it, Jeremy Brett was the best
Holmes, Basil Rathbone can not hold a candle
to him. I'm old enough to know because I've seen most of the series. Peter Cushing was
impressive and I liked him in other things, but Jeremy is my first choice, hands down!!

Jeremy Brett was not Sherlock Holmes - Sherlock Holmes was Jeremy Brett. He was simply unique.
